About the Work
In certain parts of the country you may come upon a random collection of oyster shells in the dirt. When you look closer you’ll realize that these shells have been buried under the dirt for quite some time. As you dig them up and brush the dirt away you’ll find that they are in remarkably good condition as if they were just buried. Someone once told me this is because folks would eat oysters in large quantities, maybe for a dinner party or celebration, and then they would just throw them out into the yard in a pile. And they told me that oyster shells do not degrade as they are remarkably resilient. I’ve found oyster shells all around my property. The cotton in this photograph was gathered along the side of the road in South Georgia. I grabbed a handful blowing across the road and stuck in a jar. The mystique and tortured history of cotton really hits hard when you see a cotton field in the South with your own eyes.
